Congenital CMV Basics: Risk Reduction, Early Identification, and Intervention
Congenital Cytomegalovirus (cCMV) continues to the the most common infectious cause of birth defects in the US. However, 91% of women and many healthcare providers are unaware of the incidence of cCMV, how to reduce the risk, and the consequences the virus can have for children and families. This presentation will cover CMV basics including transmission, risk reduction, screening, and interventions. Supports available to families, and resources from the National CMV Foundation will also be discussed. Updates will be given on CMV advocacy efforts at a state and national level.
- Participant will list 3 ways pregnant persons can reduce their risk of contracting CMV.
- Participant will list 3 potential outcomes for children with a congenital CMV infection.
- Participant will list 3 interventions or supports that may help children with a congenital CMV diagnosis.

Amanda graduated with her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing in 2007. She has worked in public health for 13 years, most recently focusing on maternal child health. Currently, she works as the Program Director for the National CMV Foundation. Amanda became passionate about eliminating congenital Cytomegalovirus (cCMV) when her daughter was born affected by the virus in 2015. Amanda serves on the Congenital and Inherited Disorders Advisory Committee for the state of Iowa and is the Co-President of Iowa Hands&Voices.
