The Foundations of Self-Regulation

This presentation will look at the importance of parent-child interactions and how parent response shapes a child’s ability to focus and self-regulate not only in childhood, but also throughout their lives. We will look at the concepts of serve and return, responsive parenting, and executive function, and how these impact the growth and development of the young deaf or hard-of-hearing child.

  • Understand the importance of parent-child interaction as it relates to the development of self-regulation
  • Explain the concept of executive function as it relates to young deaf/hard-of-hearing children
  • Identify strategies that can be used to support development of health self-regulation in young children
