Resource Selection of Greater Sage-Grouse During Brood Rearing on the Eastern Fringe
Sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) chicks rely primarily on arthropods during the first two weeks post hatch, and then switch to forbs, which dominate diets until they transition to consumption of sagebrush (Artemisia sp.). Consequently, arthropod abundance and vegetation composition are important factors when females select brood locations. In spring 2016 and 2017, we monitored 27 and 44 radio-collared female sage-grouse, respectively. In 2016, we monitored seven broods; in 2017, we monitored 19 broods. We located broods 2 times per week for seven weeks following hatch. We indexed vegetation structure using Daubenmire frames and Robel poles, and sampled arthropods via pitfall traps and sweep nets weekly at used sites, and two paired random sites within 1.55 km of each used site. Arthropod sampling occurred weekly at brood use sites from 1-4 weeks of age (2016 [n=15], 2017 [n=48]). Vegetation measurements occurred weekly at brood use sites from 0-7 weeks of age (2016 [n=21], 2017 [n=75]). Arthropods were sorted to Order, then dried and weighed. We conducted multivariate two-sample tests (Hotelling T² -test). In 2016, we found no difference in arthropod mass or abundance between used and random sites. Vegetative communities differed (P=0.03) between used and random sites. Post hoc t-tests indicated differences in visual obstruction readings (VOR) (P <0.01), grass height (p <0.01), and shrub cover (p <0.05) between used and random locations. Understanding sage-grouse resource selection during the brood-rearing period may help assess current range management practices and their effects on vegetation structure.
