Latinos are the fastest growing minority in the U.S. and it is estimated that 1 in 7 Latinos have a hearing loss. This increase in the Spanish speaking population has impacted many families as well as non-Spanish speaking hearing professionals. Understanding their culture, their needs, and being aware of the resources available to them may have a direct impact on their decision making and overall hearing healthcare needs. When we think of supporting the Spanish speaking population, it is much more than translating materials. MED-EL was the first to identify the hearing needs in this population and invest in creating a bilingual program that consists of bilingual hearing professionals that are experts in the field. This 30 minute session will introduce MED-EL’s Bilingual Program, UnidosOimos, unique cultural approach to serving and supporting this community. Attend this session to learn how and why this program was designed, get to know the “MED-EL architects”, and the “foundation” it is built upon as well as “floorplan” of resources available that could directly impact the Spanish speaking population with hearing loss. We have made UnidosOimos a “home” for our Spanish speaking families, come to learn how MED-EL is meeting the unique hearing needs of the Spanish speaking population.
- After this course, participants will be able to list at least one impact of cultural and language barriers between patients and medical staff.
- After this course, participants will be able to describe the percentage of Latinos in the United States.
- After this course, participants will be able to categorize at least two bilingual resources available from MED-EL.
