Don’t Stop the Learning: Assistive Technology for Struggling Readers in the Classroom
School can be a difficult place for a student that is unable to read at the same level as their peers. While evidenced based reading instruction is critical for these students, they should not fall behind in other subjects because of their reading difficulties. This session will provide hands on technology tutorials to help students that struggle to read through the use of assistive technology. This session will provide ideas and solutions to improve outcomes and increase accessibility to the curriculum. The presenter will offer concrete suggestions on types of assistive technology available and how to successfully incorporate them into the classroom for struggling readers. The session will focus on these three main objectives: 1) Using technology to support reading and learning 2) Using technology to support note taking and 3) Using technology to support spelling and writing.
- Use Technology to Support Reading and Learning: Attendees will learn to use apps and software to support reading difficulties in the classroom. Hands on demonstrations of apps, chrome extensions, and functions built into commonly used devices will show how technology can be used to provide audio access to text.
- Use Technology to Support Note Taking: Attendees will learn to use apps, software, and livescribe pens to support reading and writing difficulties in the classroom. Hands on demonstrations of apps, chrome extensions, and functions built into commonly used devices will show how technology can be used to provide alternative solutions for note taking in the classroom.
- Use Technology to Support Spelling and Writing: Attendees will learn to use apps and software to support writing and spelling difficulties in the classroom. Hands on demonstrations of apps, chrome extensions, and functions built into commonly used devices will show how technology can be used to provide supports for writing and spelling.

Jennifer is the President of Decoding Dyslexia Utah. Decoding Dyslexia Utah is a volunteer run 501(c)3 non-profit organization that educates, advocates, and legislates for students with dyslexia in the state of Utah. Jennifer has 4 amazing children, 3 of whom have dyslexia. Sense moving to Utah 5 years ago Jennifer has dedicated her time to bringing awareness to dyslexia and the impact it has on Utah children. Jennifer serves on the Utah State Dyslexia Task Force and the Utah Special Education Advisory Panel. She is the Conference Director for the Wasatch Reading Summit a USBE sponsored reading difficulties conference. Jennifer believes that strong educator/parent relations help achieve student success.

Eric Price

Eric Price spent several years as a teacher and administrator in Title 1 schools in the Houston, Texas, area. He spent 4 years as middle school assistant principal in Utah before his current position as the Principal at Fort Herriman Middle School, a National School to Watch, in Jordan School District. Price has an M.Ed from Lamar University in educational administration and a bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University in history education. Eric is the father of four amazing kids, three of whom have dyslexia and are currently on IEP's. Mr. Price has presented at regional conferences, national webinars, and has been published in EdWeek.
