Implicit Bias in Audiology: How Does it Affect Families of Deaf Children?

Audiologists are an integral part of the EHDI system. We have a responsibility to parents of deaf children to ensure that they have all the resources they need to make informed decisions for their child. When presenting information, the language we use and the way we convey information is often influenced by implicit bias that can negatively affect their deaf child's path to successful language acquisition. This presentation will discuss how we can reduce implicit bias in order to give deaf children and their families the best path to success.

  • Identify potential biases that affect how audiologists influence parents' decision-making processes
  • Discuss the intersections of race, socioeconomic status, and language in relation to information sharing with families of deaf children
  • Identify professional development and leadership opportunities regarding cultural and linguistic competence in the EHDI system
