Assessing the Development of Parent Sign Language and Book Sharing Skills

This presentation will describe two assessment tools developed at the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind and the University of Colorado-Boulder that can be used to objectively measure parents’ skills in the following areas: 1) sign vocabulary acquisition, 2) use of American Sign Language linguistic features, 3) book reading techniques, and 4) incorporation of sign language when reading books to their child. One of the assessments measures parent sign vocabulary and the second evaluates 30 different sign language and book sharing skills which will be described and demonstrated through video models. We will describe how these instruments can be used to a) assess a family’s current skill level, b) measure their progress over time, and c) develop intervention goals. Based on the results of over 100 assessments using this instrument, a developmental sequence will be presented from an adult learning perspective that can be used to determine an appropriate hierarchy of goals for families in the areas of sign language and book sharing skills.

Allison Sedey is a speech pathologist, audiologist, and research associate. She works at the University of Colorado-Boulder and the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind and is currently the director of the Outcomes and Developmental Data Assistance Center for EHDI Programs (ODDACE) supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The purpose of this center is to expand public health capacity to gather, analyze, and use intervention and developmental outcome data of children who are deaf or hard of hearing between birth and 5 years of age throughout the United States. The center aims to increase our understanding of factors that impact the outcomes of children who are deaf or hard of hearing at the state and national level.

Deborah Branch (), Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind, dbranch@csdb.org;
Deborah Branch is a teacher of the Deaf and currently the Distance Learning Coordinator within the Outreach Department at the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind (CSDB). She has taught children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing at a variety of levels in Washington, Hawaii and Colorado. She worked as a Reading Specialist in the School for the Deaf at CSDB and coordinated the Shared Reading Project, supporting literacy and sign language development with families throughout Colorado. She received a graduate certificate in Teaching K-12 Online and supports online learning for students, professionals and families.
