Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) Conservation Program in the Augustowska Forest, Poland, 2013-2018.

In 2013, when the capercaillie population in Augustowska Forest (AF) was estimated at ca. 20-30 individuals, comprehensive conservation measures with the support of Polish State Forests Fund and European Union LIFE program were initiated: 1) release in total 118 captive-reared and translocated birds; 2) removal of excessive tree undergrowth at the forest bottom in the area of 251 ha and marking of wire fences (39 km); 3) establishing of the Capercaillie breeding centre (17 capercaillies in the breeding stock); 4) setting up 16 adaptation aviaries in AF; 5) restriction of the anthropogenic impact; 6) reduction of predatory mammals and translocation of Northern goshawks; 7) education and dissemination activities targeting ca. 2000 participants. Results of actions have been evaluated by comprehensive monitoring: VHF telemetry, direct observations, annual inventories and genetic analyses. In 2016, a further decline trend in population size was stopped. Direct observations in summer in 2017 confirmed two females leading chicks, hatched and brought up under natural conditions. In 2017, in the breeding centre, the number of eggs lied (46) and hatched (24) and then reared chicks (9) was doubled compared to the results of 2015 and 2016. Censuses of dens occupation by predatory mammals showed that the number of actively occupied dens was reduced from 5.21 dens per 1000 ha in 2013 to 1.0 den per 1000 ha in 2016. Conservation activities will be continued within the new conservation program for period 2018-2021, financed by the EU Operational Program Infrastructure and Environment and Polish State Forests Fund
