How Faith Helps and Hinders in Interfaith Marriages

Abstract This study investigates the experiences of interfaith couples by analyzing their reports of how they have experienced religion as both helpful and harmful. The current study utilized a purposive sampling technique to recruit interfaith couples. A total of 31 married interfaith couples were interviewed and recorded and transcribed verbatim. Transcribed interviews then went through phases of coding to identify themes. The results showed that interfaith couples report a mixed experience of helpful and harmful experiences with their faiths and their family life. Further analysis will focus on clarifying these themes and understanding how they interact with one another. The current study utilizes a systematic qualitative approach to examine the experiences of interfaith couples. Our findings contribute to the field by identifying the ways in which these couples experience religion as both beneficial and harmful. A deeper understanding of these couples is likely to be of interest to those invested in helping families thrive, particularly family therapists and religious leaders.
