Pediatric Hearing Aid Use: Parent-Reported Challenges

Hearing loss is routinely identified in infants as young as one to two months of age in the United States through newborn hearing screening. Parent ability to effectively integrate hearing aid management skills into daily routines is critical for spoken language development. An understanding of parent challenges related to hearing aid management when hearing aids are fitted in infancy can help audiologists and other healthcare professionals better support parents, leading to more effective management and improved child outcomes. The aim of this pilot study was to collect data from mothers and fathers to better understand parent experiences related to hearing aid management and parental psychosocial characteristics during the first three years of the child’s life. Findings from the pilot study will be presented. Parents experienced an array of challenges, even after their children had been wearing hearing aids for many months. The experiences parents reported provided valuable information about areas that need further investigation to improve the process for parents of children with hearing loss.

Karen Muñoz is department head and professor of audiology at Utah State University in the Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education. She is also associate director of the National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management. Her research focus is in the area of childhood hearing loss.
