Trends in Estimated Abundance of the Greater Prairie-Chicken in Kansas and Oklahoma

Obtaining unbiased estimates of population size is important in establishing appropriate management practices. A probabilistic sampling approach allowed us to achieve precise and unbiased estimate of greater prairie-chicken abundance (Tympanuchus cupido) within its range in Kansas and Oklahoma. We flew 440 transects within a sample of 220 cells selected using a spatially balanced sampling procedure in 2015 and 2018. A mark-recapture distance sampling method was used to estimate the abundance of leks and total population size. We conducted double-observer sampling trials to estimate the probability that an observer would detect a cluster of prairie chickens and account for the imperfect detection on the transect line. The distance sampling detection function was estimated using model averaging and included covariates: distance to transect, size, and habitat type. A similar survey effort funded by the Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies was completed 2012 - 2018 to estimate the abundance of lesser prairie-chickens (Tympanuchus pallidicinctus) and greater prairie-chickens in four ecoregions in the Great Plains, U.S. In northwest Kansas, the lesser and greater prairie-chicken ranges overlap and therefore we estimated the population size for the greater prairie-chicken from 2012 - 2018 within the Northern High Plains of northwest Kansas. We evaluated trends in population size of greater prairie-chickens 2012 through 2018 in the Northern High Plains, 2015 and 2018 in the Eastern Smoky Hills, Flint Hills, Glaciated Plains, and Osage Cuestas & Chautauqua Hills, Kansas, and in Oklahoma 2015 and 2018.
