The Invisible Minority: Tiered Supports for LGBTQ Youth in Schools
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or questioning (LGBTQ) youth and those perceived as LGBTQ are at an increased risk of anxiety, depression, being bullied, and a multitude of other negative outcomes that impact their school experience. There are important and unique considerations for strategies to prevent and address bullying of LGBT youth.It is important to build a safe environment for all youth, whether they are straight or LGBTQ. All youth can thrive when they feel supported. Schools can and should play a role in helping LGBTQ youth feel physically and emotionally safe. This session will share strategies are resources to help schools establish a safe and affirming environment at school at each of the three tiers within a multi-tiered system of supports.
- Participants will characteristics and needs of LGBTQ youth and the associated health, social-emotional risks, and school outcomes
- Participants will List ways to be affirming and welcoming to LGBTQ youth
- Participants will Identify tiered supports schools can utilized, including families of LGBTQ youth, to create positive school environments
