Parents and Professionals Team Up for Speech!
Newborn hearing screening has made the promise of early identification and intervention a reality for so many infants. Screening by the age of 1 month, diagnostic testing by age 3 months, and intervention begun by age 6 months is the ideal scenario. Expectations for outcomes in listening and spoken language are typically high for children who follow the timeline. Barriers to progress can occur, however, when not all members of the team share the same goals and have the requisite knowledge and skills to follow through with the standards of care as set out by numerous bodies (e.g., AAA, AG Bell, ASHA, JCIH, etc.). Precious time can be lost when assessments that target necessary adjustments are lacking.
The speakers will present a case study of one family’s journey with their young child to identify the missing elements necessary for speech development. The McGinnis Phonologic Screening is a parent- and professional-friendly assessment that revealed the child’s gaps in her speech development, and that also served as the basis for targeting remediation of her speech. Parents and professionals worked together to choose developmentally appropriate strategies and activities to allow her speech, beginning with voice, to become intelligible to not only her family, but to unfamiliar listeners as well.
Participants will review concepts of the Ling speech system in assessing, developing, and remediating listening and spoken language with diverse languages, including English and Spanish. Participants will apply assessment and remediation tools in English and Spanish to the video case study.
- Participants will explain the basic concepts of the Ling speech system for teaching listening and spoken language in developmental and remedial early childhood contexts.
- Participants will review resource materials that assist parents and professionals in using the Ling speech system to assess, develop, and remediate listening and spoken language in English and Spanish early childhood contexts.
- Participants will apply the McGinnis Phonologic Screening for parents and professionals in assessing and remediating speech issues demonstrated in video a case study.
