The Siemens electric solution for heavy duty road freight has been developed to address the challenge of road freight emissions in an economical and environmentally sustainable manner. Combining expertise from rail electrification, electric drives and an active current collector for dynamically connecting to the catenary, initial projects have been built to demonstrate that a hybrid truck can run in pure electric mode without any change in driver operations. The results have included the first and second fully operable hybrid trucks running on dedicated infrastructure in Sweden and in California. The initial catenary hybrid trucks have demonstrated full performance for everyday use – regardless of the environmental and load conditions. In addition to providing highly promising results in terms of technology, the demonstrations have also shown benefits to the environment and economy. The system can be integrated with existing infrastructure, making it easier and cheaper to implement and maintain.
