Supporting Families through Diagnosis

In this presentation, Ohio EHDI, Family Child Learning Center (FCLC), and Ohio Hands & Voices (OHV) will share the results of our collaborative training for audiologists who diagnose hearing loss in infants and toddlers. The training we developed was designed to share family perspectives of a hearing loss diagnosis with audiologists in our state. We will share our collaborative process with participants, as well as results from a family questionnaire and strategies audiologists can use to support families while diagnosing a child with a hearing loss. Ohio Hands & Voices asked 36 families to share their experiences and feelings about when their child was diagnosed with a hearing loss. OHV used that information, along with a review of the literature, to develop a training for Ohio EHDI to provide to audiologists across Ohio. We will share parts of the final statewide training with participants; including family perspectives and feelings, informational and adjustment counseling, and strategies for audiologists to use at the moment to offer unique family support while diagnosing a hearing loss.

  • Participants will learn how the Ohio EHDI program collaborated with family support organizations to develop training for diagnosing audiologists in the state.
  • Participants will hear from at least three families about their experience and feelings when their child was diagnosed with a hearing loss.
  • Participants will learn at least three strategies to adjust their counseling services to assist families at the moment.
