Collaborating with Stakeholders to Support Follow-up
Many EHDI programs across the country struggle with delayed or limited follow-up for diagnostic audiology and enrollment in early intervention. The Nevada EHDI Program will share several key relationships and jointly funded activities which have resulted in a high percentage of D/HH children enrolled in Part C early intervention programs. By working collaboratively with pediatric audiologists, the Part C Office, local early intervention agencies, and Nevada Hands & Voices Guide by Your Side program, as well as funding specific training and educational opportunities for these entities, follow-up has improved and enrollment in early intervention has surpassed the national average. This presentation will detail specific activities and their impact on audiology follow-up and early intervention enrollment as well as highlight the data collection and sharing procedures of the key players. We anticipate that the strategies presented can be duplicated or modified by other states to produce similarly successful outcomes.
- Participants will be able to identify three activities suited for stakeholder collaboration.
- Participants will learn how to develop a collaborative working relationship with family-based organizations.
- Participants will be able to identfiy and adapt strategies to fit work processes within their states.

Beth Jones is the Executive Director for Nevada Hands & Voices, as well as the Guide By Your Side Coordinator and an Educational Advocate for the ASTra Program. Prior to beginning a family, Beth earned her master’s degree in Special Education and worked as an Autism Teacher and Behavior Mentor Teacher. Beth became involved with Hands & Voices when two of her three children were identified as being deaf/hard of hearing and has been a part of Nevada Hands & Voices since 2012. She serves on many state-wide and national committees, teams, and advisory boards as a parent leader to help advocate and support children who are deaf/hard of hearing.

Diane Miller

Dr. Diane Miller received her master’s degree in audiology from the University of Arizona in 1988 and earned her Au.D. from A.T. Still University in 2009. She has over thirty years clinical experience focusing on the birth – three and special needs populations. She consults with the Nevada EHDI Program, working diligently with parents, hospitals, physicians, and other audiologists to ensure infants receive timely and appropriate audiological and early intervention services. She helped develop many of the program’s educational materials and travels throughout the state to train and support screening and follow-up providers. In addition, she established and managed a statewide loaner hearing aid bank for children. She has served on several boards and committees including the Nevada Speech-Language-Hearing Association, the Nevada Hands & Voices Advisory Board, and the NV EHDI Stakeholders Committee. She enjoys reading books, exploring foreign countries, and hiking the deserts and valleys of Nevada.

Nichole Sheldon

Dr. Nichole Sheldon started her career as a sign language interpreter at Northern Illinois University. She earned a master’s degree in audiology from NIU in 2002 and a Doctor of Audiology degree from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, School of Audiology in 2005. Dr. Sheldon has been an educational audiologist at the Clark County School District for the past 18 years. She is also a consultant for the Nevada Early Hearing Detection Intervention Program. Dr. Sheldon is a Nevada Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (NvLEND) graduate and she currently serves as a NvLEND faculty member. Her special interests include education advocacy and interdisciplinary collaboration to maximize outcomes for children who are deaf or hard of hearing. In her spare time, Dr. Sheldon enjoys practicing yoga and traveling with her husband and two daughters.
