Mindfulness and Meditation Practices for Domestic Violence Therapists

Meditation and mindfulness have become increasingly popular within psychotherapy literature and clinical practice. Therapists can find a plethora of books, downloadable files, and applications with guided meditations for personal and professional use. Meditation can promote inner calm and physical relaxation, and assist with reducing anxiety and panic symptoms. Mindfulness can encourage awareness and acceptance of the self and of situations. Many clients find tremendous benefit in learning these techniques as part of their therapeutic experience. Meditation and mindfulness practice with survivors of trauma and domestic violence have the potential to be incredibly powerful as well as inadvertently triggering. This presentation will help participants identify possible triggers for specific clients and client populations, learn how to adapt existing meditation scripts and mindfulness techniques to be more effective and appropriate with this population, and gain some practice and confidence in creating personalized guided meditations for use in practice.

  • Gain an understanding of mindfulness and meditation
  • Learn how mindfulness and meditation can be utilized with clients recovering from the effects of domestic violence
  • Create a personalized meditation script to use with clients at your next session
