Age Related Hearing Loss at Gwagwalada Area Council of Federal Capital Territory, Abuja
Background: Adult-onset hearing loss, (Presbyacusis) is a cause of hearing loss in adults worldwide. It usually affects the high frequencies of hearing. Presbyacusis, has a tremendous impact on the quality of life of millions of the aged and is fast becoming an increasingly prevalent disorder as the population ages. It is thus a common but relatively under recognized health problem in the aged in our society.
Aim/objective: This study evaluated the hearing threshold and Pure Tone Audiometric pattern of participants with age related hearing loss in Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal capital territory-Abuja
Method: The study was a prospective community based cross-sectional study conducted at Gwagwalada Area Council of FCT, Abuja. Participants aged fifty-five years and above were recruited into the study. All had detailed clinical assessment, tympanometry and diagnostic pure-tone audiometry. Result presented in descriptive charts and tables and p-value set at p ? 0.05.
Result: One hundred and fourteen participants were recruited into the study, out of which fourteen were excluded from the final analysis. The age range of the participants was 55 to 79years, with a mean age of 65.8 ±5.6 years. Sixty-five (65.0%) males and thirty-five (35.0%) females participated in the study. The symptom commonly reported was tinnitus in 68.0% of the participants. Pure Tone Audiometric evaluation showed that twenty-five (25.0%) participants had normal hearing threshold while seventy-five (75.0%) participants had SNHL. Prevalence of age related hearing loss in this study was found to be 75.0%.
CONCLUSION: The study showed that the prevalence of age related hearing loss in the studied population at Gwagwalada Area Council, of FCT, Abuja was 75.0%. Majority had moderate SNHL with downward sharp-slope at high frequencies.

I, Dr. Folorunso David Femi was born to the family of a clergy man, the late Deacon Jacob Giwa Owodele Agbasinmi on 3rd of December 1970, at Ile-Agun Compound, Share Kwara State. At age five, I was enrolled into Kindergarten at United Missionary Church of Africa, Share Kwara state, Nigeria and finished primary School in 1985. I Proceeded to Secondary School and graduated in 1992 at Government Secondary School.
I was offered provision admission into University of Jos to read medicine in 1992, and graduated in 2001 with MBBS. I had my Housemanship at Bauchi Specialist Hospital, Bauchi State, in 2002. I started my residency programme at Department of ENT(ORL), University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, to specialize in Ear, Nose,Throat/ Head and Neck Surgery, and I became a Fellow with West African College of Surgeons in October, 2015 where I am practicing till date. I am Married and blessed with three children.
