Deaf Role Models: Making the Family Support Puzzle Complete

Some parents have found that learning American Sign Language (ASL) can be a daunting task. They may become overwhelmed by the process of incorporating ASL into their daily routines and learning a new language altogether. This workshop introduces you to the concepts and benefits of having a Deaf role model as a part of your family service plan. Logistics for set up of the program and a variety of home visit plans will be shared as well as tips for transitioning grieving parents to the learning and celebrating stage. Videos of different home visits will also be shown. Rather than learning ASL in a classroom setting geared for persons who want to learn a language, parents are able to learn functional ASL through learning how to sign stories. Learning ASL this way then becomes a process that is enjoyable for any member of the family in their home/neighborhood environment rather than learning “the basics” and how to communicate with their child in a classroom setting. There is documented research showing that linking English stories and everyday routines with ASL provides for a successful shared literacy experience that leads to development towards becoming a bilingual person.

Deaf herself, Madelyn is an Early Intervention Specialist with Outreach Services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children in Indianapolis, Indiana. Her roles include co-facilitating local and regional playgroups statewide, home-based family education services, and Deaf Mentoring. She is currently working on her Master's degree in Early Childhood Education from Indiana University. A southern girl, Madelyn is married to a Deaf Hoosier and they enjoy boating and spending time with their family and furbabies.

Danny Lucero (Primary Presenter,Author), Outreach Services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children, dlucero@isd.k12.in.us;
Danny comes from a Deaf family of four generations from New Mexico and currently works as a Deaf Role Model Coordinator with the Outreach Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. His role involves early interventions for families with the need for support during their child’s critical time for language development; a Deaf Role Model allows family to get personalized, research-based instruction on fostering their child’s American Sign Language and English. This is a wonderful opportunity for families to connect with a Deaf adult and address concerns they have about their Deaf child. As an American Indian of Navajo/Apache/Chicano background he brings a wealth of stories, culture and has traveled enormously in giving presentation/workshops related to early intervention and Diversity issues. He is married to a Deaf Slovakian, has a son who attends IUPUI and a Deaf daughter who masters five languages at home.
