Exploring the effects of attachment & empathy on sexual satisfaction

The issue of divorce is nothing new to modern society. Every reason behind divorce shares a commonality – a lack of relationship satisfaction. This research explores how to improve romantic relationships, which includes sexual satisfaction as sexual satisfaction and romantic satisfaction are intertwined (Muise et al., 2018). The factors used to help determine sexual satisfaction in the research are empathy and attachment. The data uses an ‘Active-Empathetic Listening Scale’ to measure intimacy between couples. Empathy is both perceived and accurate, or feeling understood and how someone seems to understand (Cramer, 2010). Both parts impact sexual satisfaction differently. Empathy seems to increase sexual satisfaction because it helps improve communication. There is, however, a gap in the research between empathetic listening and sexual satisfaction as there are not many studies that look at the relationship between the two. The aim is to close the gap between the two and identify if there is a relationship. Attachment styles play a central role in sexual satisfaction. Attachment experiences influence personality development including emotional intelligence development, self-esteem, and general well-being (Nanu, 2015). In addition to this, attachment has significant connections to interpersonal development and skills, particularly one’s sexual satisfaction with their partner. Individuals who self-reportedly have secure attachment styles will be more successful in achieving sexual satisfaction with their partner. Through interactions with attachment figures, individuals construct a large portion of their self-image and self-esteem (Nanu, 2015). As self-esteem is most often a direct response to attachment history, self-esteem moderates the relationship between attachment and sexual satisfaction. In order to fully understand the factors that impact sexual satisfaction, we propose the following questions. Does empathy have an effect on sexual satisfaction? What are the connections between attachment and sexual satisfaction? Does self-esteem moderate the relationship between attachment and sexual satisfaction?
