Where Should Development Go?

Participants will explore a newly-developed curriculum resource available in Oregon but widely applicable. Land use planning laws have a tremendous impact on the availability of farm land throughout our country. In this activity, students (and teachers) learn about the challenges of planning for development while still protecting important farmland, forestland and wildlife habitat. Participants will be presented with a raised relief map and the challenge to plan (using real-life planning codes and population projections) for development while considering several important factors. The workshop will also explore the history of planning and states' various solutions to this challenge!
