Developing EHDI Database Systems in the Federated States of Micronesia
The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) is an island nation that is freely associated with the United States and has participated in the EHDI program initiative since 2009. Establishing a tracking and surveillance system for the babies born in the 4 FSM States (Pohnpei, Kosrae, Yap, and Chuuk)which are all seperated by miles of ocean, encountered significant challenges which eventually led to the development of the Hearing Evaluation Record, or HER system for the FSM-EHDI program. Participants will learn of the challenges, obstacles, solutions, and the decision making process that led to its development, and will also participate in providing recommendations for expansion and refinement.
- Describe the challenges faced by the Federated States of Micronesia, with its many island states across miles of ocean, in developing an integrated, relevant, and user-friendly data management system for the EHDI program
- Explain the decision-making process, obstacles, and solutions leading to the establishment of the FSM EHDI database tracking and surveillance system (referred to as the Hearing Evaluation Record (HER System)
- Assess current status of system development and propose other alternatives or reporting protocols to improve system operations
