Incorporating ASL into a Total Communication Program

The needs of young deaf and hard of hearing children are as diverse as ever; the programs that serve them need to be flexible, nimble, and creative to respond to the changing need. This presentation will focus on the experience of one preschool that incorporated American Sign Language into what was previously a simultaneous communication environment. The teachers will share strategies for providing access to both spoken English and ASL, evaluating and monitoring progress in each language, developing and maintaining strong deaf-hearing teams within the classroom, and involving paraeducators in the educational program. Participants will also have the opportunity to examine some of the challenges that persist in the current model and discuss possible solutions.

  • Explain 2 strategies for providing children with access to signed and spoken language in the classroom.
  • Identify 3 features of an effective deaf-hearing team of teachers/paraeducators.
  • State 3 challenges that persist in the current model and brainstorm possible solutions.
