Promoting Language Acquisition: Activities from the Frontlines

Early interventionists are always in search of resources to support their important work educating families. Setting Language in Motion: Family Supports and Early Intervention for Babies who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing, a free online resource, was launched last year to meet this need. This resource, developed collaboratively between the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program of Boston Children’s Hospital and the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center, provides a series of videos and handouts beneficial to service providers in their work with families. Following its launch, the Clerc Center identified early intervention providers to review these modules and share practices and resources to expand on Setting Language in Motion. This practical “how to” information, is now incorporated into Setting Language in Motion as an online Activity Guide. This Guide expands on topics such as early access to language, understanding hearing, hearing aids, launching communication through sign, cochlear implants, promoting communication at home, and parenting a child who is deaf or hard of hearing. This presentation will share information about the “frontline” practical ideas and strategies found in the Activity Guide. Highlights from the numerous activities will be shared. Early intervention providers who contributed to this resource will be available to discuss their ideas and insights about how to open up important discussions with families, and how to make early intervention practices, meaningful and practical.

  • Participants will learn how to navigate the practical early intervention activities provided in the Activity Guide.
  • Participants will be able to discuss the content of at least 3 activities provided in the Activity Guide.
  • Participants will be able to discuss how they will use at least 2 of the provided activities in their work.
