Supporting the Development of Parent Sign Language and Book Sharing Skills
Book-sharing is integral to the development of early literacy and language skills in young children. Sharing books using sign language can be challenging for families. This presentation will describe activities that will help interventionists support families in the development of both sign language and book-sharing skills. A rubric has been developed by Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind to measure parents' skills in 15 different aspects of sign language and 15 different book-sharing techniques. Goals and suggested activities were developed from the rubric to guide instruction. In this presentation we will share our experiences working with families on specific goals and will demonstrate techniques and activities that can support parents in their development of both sign language and book-sharing skills. Descriptions of activities will be accompanied by both live and video demonstrations.

Deborah Branch is a teacher of the Deaf and currently the Distance Learning Coordinator within the Outreach Department at the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind (CSDB). She has taught children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing at a variety of levels in Washington, Hawaii and Colorado. She worked as a Reading Specialist in the School for the Deaf at CSDB and coordinated the Shared Reading Project, supporting literacy and sign language development with families throughout Colorado. She received a graduate certificate in Teaching K-12 Online and supports online learning for students, professionals and families.

Kim Parra

Kim Parra has been involved with the Colorado Shared Reading Project (CSRP) for over ten years. As a Language and Literacy Instructor, she provides literacy and sign language instruction to families with children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. In addition, she manages CSRP databases and provides assessment input to instructors. She has quickly learned that her passion is working with children and bridging the communication gap within families. Kim received her BA in Criminology from the University of Denver.
