Harm Reduction Basics and Syringe Services Programs in Utah

This presentation will go over the principles and concepts of harm reduction and have a discussion on how people can apply the principles to their work, whatever that is. We will discuss what syringe exchange is and how it works and what we are doing in Utah.

Heather Bush has worked in HIV Prevention in Utah for over 22 years. In that time she has worked with people who use drugs, youth, people in corrections and other vulnerable populations to help them address the issues that put them at risk for HIV and Hepatitis C. She is a certified Harm Reduction Navigator Trainer and has overseen Utah's Syringe Exchange Program for the Utah Department of Health since May of 2016.

Tricia Bishop (), triciabishop@utah.gov;
Ms. Bishop has a Degree in Community Health Education from the University of Wisconsin LaCrosse. Her degree has led to work in the HIV prevention and Harm Reductions fields in Wisconsin and in Utah for the past 20 years. This work included education, prevention, counseling and testing in high risk populations. She has also work a cumulative of 10 years in Higher Education at the University of Utah and Salt Lake Community College as the Health Promotion/Prevention Manager. She is currently the new Syringe Exchange Specialist at the Utah Department of Health working closely with Syringe Exchange Programs in the state providing technical assistance, training and other support.
