Hearing International Fostering Education for Global Hearing Health
Hearing International a public charity is dedicated to improving hearing health in developing countries. It seeks to align otologists, audiologists, hearing interventionists, deaf educators, and hearing device manufacturers, all with technical know-how and understanding of world standards for consumer groups to lay the fundamental ground work at a grass-roots level. The mission of Hearing International, “Healthy Ears and Hearing for All,” will be achieved through the education of patients, their families, primary caregivers, otolaryngologist, and audiologist throughout the world.
Fifteen Centers of Excellence are located in Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Myanmar, China, India, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and the USA. Center members meet annually for discussions and advice on projects and problems. Activities designed to improve skills of Center members include: 1) periodic courses updating information and hands-on skills training in applications of newer audiology and vestibular techniques, 2) early newborn hearing screening and intervention, 3) hands on-training in surgery of the temporal bone, and 4) formal educational experiences with visiting fellowships and university degree programs at Universities in the UK and USA. These activities are jointly sponsored between the universities and home countries in partnership.
Ongoing projects of established and developing Center’s include regional and national public education on hearing health including mitigating noise-induced hearing loss, large-scale population studies on congenital hearing loss and impact of vaccination programs, primary and advanced education of medical and surgical interventions for hearing loss, and development of on-line training resources that increase availability of educational resources. The philosophy of training-the-trainers has made significant changes in hearing health for their people, though much remains to be accomplished. Hearing International seeks to advance education of local experts and help develop independence of communities and countries in their hearing health care delivery. This presentation will give a more in-depth descriptions of training performed and current center activities.
- Understand the mission of Hearing International
- Understand the need for a educational based training, rather than mission surgery
- Appreciate the need for countries and communities to become independent in their health care delivery.
