Ecological Service Learning ; A Training Model for Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology
The purpose of this presentation is to provide an alternative for Audiology and Speech-Language Interns training that will use an Ecological Service Learning Model. The model entails an educational approach which combines intern learning objectives with community service in order to provide a pragmatic, progressive learning experience. The interns are guided by their instructors to apply classroom learning to induce positive changes in hearing and balance health practices in the community with the collaboration of non-profit organizations. The communities induce new social perspective, attitudinal and management strategy changes on the interns as they address health disparities on thir own environment Through the session the participants will gain understanding of the benefits and implications of using this approach with undersderved and isolated communities.
- Demonstrate the value of ecological service learning to train Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology interns to the participants.
- Analyze the implications of using this model with isolated and underserved communities.
- Discuss the benefits of exposing the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology interns to the Ecological Service Model in terms of Attitude changes and clinical management approaches
