Taking a trauma informed approach to family engagement

Many family services are making the move towards providing trauma informed care, with some states even requiring that models be trauma informed within agencies. This presentation will define trauma and trauma-informed care from a service provider’s perspective, and review several examples of how trauma may show up in a family services environment. It will discuss unique factors impacting families in the deaf and hard of hearing community including medical traumas & systemic/cultural traumas. Participants will review guidelines from SAMHSA publication, “ Key Ingredients for Successful Trauma Informed Care” (2016), and be given practical guidelines for creating safety for those who have experienced traumas including reviewing the role of consent as a service provider, how to make treatment clear and predictable and creating emotional safety through open communication. Containment strategies will also be reviewed for ensuring appropriate boundaries. Presentation will be delivered in a 30 minute lecture that will utilize two key case examples to illustrate core concepts. Participants will leave with a better understanding of the concept of trauma, how it continues to impact future services provided and how to make small changes in their approaches with families keeping these ideas in mind while working with them.

  • Participants will be able to define trauma and trauma informed care.
  • Participants will learn concrete strategies for providing trauma informed care.
  • Participants will understand how trauma applies specifically within deaf and hard of hearing family systems.
