“My favorite subjects are recess, PE, and going home”: PBIS in unstructured settings.
Students typically love and need unstructured time in their school day. However, sometimes the lack of structure and clear expectations during unstructured time promotes behavior problems. While schools may be implementing positive behavior interventions and supports in the classroom and common areas, they should also prioritize prevention of behavior problems in unstructured settings. Participants will learn about models of implementation of PBIS on the playground, on the bus, and during P.E.
- Participants will learn about how the pillars of positive behavior interventions and supports apply in unstructured settings
- Participants will be made aware of model sites that have implemented positive behavior interventions and supports in unstructured settings
- Participants will identify action items for next steps of implementing positive behavior interventions and supports in unstructured settings.

Devin Healey is a Tiered Supports Coordinator in the Student and Family Resources department of Davis School District. He previously served as the director of the Utah Multi-Tier System of Supports project at the Utah State Board of Education. He has worked as a school psychologist in elementary and secondary settings, and in providing professional development and coaching to Utah LEAs around many topics related to MTSS implementation.

Allan Whitmore

Allan Whitmore is a counselor in Wasatch School District at Midway Elementary. He previously has worked for Canyons School District as a teacher specialist focusing on prevention efforts. He is passionate about setting us school-wide PBIS systems and effectively teaching social skills. He is trained as a school counselor and a recreational therapist. Previous positions include working for Wasatch County School District and Primary Children’s Medical Center. He live with his wife and four sons in the beautiful Kamas Valley.

Steve Loveland

Steve Loveland is a tiered supports coordinator in the student and family resources department in Davis School District. He has previously worked as a school psychologist and a related services coordinator in Davis. He has supported school in the areas of least restrictive environment for students, special education law, and evaluation of students with disabilities.
