Routines-Based Intervention in the Community: Utilizing Deaf Mentors and Interpreters to support Family Outcomes for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Bilingual Children.
Routines-Based Intervention (RBI) does not need to be saved for the home, as much of life happens outside the confines of our homes. It is critical to identify outcomes of successful language interactions in environments such as the grocery store, the library for story time, and neighborhood playground meet-ups. Development of American Sign Language/English language strategies, along with embedding cultural perspectives, is essential to growing a strong bilingual child. We will explore the collaborative relationship between the parent, child, community members, Deaf Mentor, and interpreter. We will highlight outcomes, and strategies for relationship building, role definition, identification of community allies, reflective team collaboration, and cross-environment language planning. In addition, we will discuss the importance of supporting self-advocacy and independence of young children. Videos of RBI outcomes being supported in community environments will be viewed and analyzed.

- Participants will be able to identify three principles of community-based Deaf Mentor/Interpreter supported sessions

Catherine J. Lushman received her Master’s degree in Deaf Education from Western Maryland College. She started her career as a drama teacher working at the Texas School for the Deaf, in Austin, Texas. She has taught preschool through third grade at the Maine Educational Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing since 1996. She currently resides in Maine with her husband Rob, and their daughter Norah Jane. She can be contacted at catherine.lushman@mecdhh.org.

Marisa Zastrow is the Interpreter Coordinator for the Maine Educational Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Ms. Zastrow has a Masters Degree from Gallaudet University in ASL/English Linguistics. She is responsible for the coordination of all Part C/Part B interpreting and interpreting mentoring services in the State of Maine.
