Building Resiliency in Elementary Schools

  • Developing a Growth Mindset focus can help students; especially those who have experienced trauma.
  • Belief that behaviors are a form of communication; no need to punish.
  • Student Teacher Assistance teams (Response to Intervention Teams) need to look at the whole child, not just the underdeveloped skill. Having the right members on the team makes the difference.

Shellie Healy (), White Pine Elementary School, shellie.healy@ccsdut.org;
Shellie started her teaching career in 1995 with Bear Lake School District. From there, she taught with Preston School District and has been in Cache School District for the bulk of her 24 years. She has a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education with a certificate in Administration/Supervisory along with endorsements in ESL, Gifted and Talented, and Elementary Mathematics. She was Teacher of the Year in 2010-2011 while at Birch Creek Elementary and Cache County School District’s Teacher of the Year in 2012-2013. She has been the principal at White Pine Elementary since 2015.

Jake Downs (), White Pine Elementary School, jake.downs@ccsdut.org;
Jake Downs teaches 4th grade at White Pine Elementary, where he is chair of STAT (Student & Teacher Assistance Team). He has a master's degree in instructional technology and learning sciences with a USBE endorsement in educational technology and is currently working towards a PhD in literacy and leadership at USU. Jake was nominated as White Pine's teacher of the year for the 2018-2019 school year.

Belinda Burningham (), White Pine Elementary School, Belinda.Burningham@ccsdut.org;
Belinda Burningham has been teaching Kindergarten in the Cache School District since 2004 bringing with her experience in teaching first grade and preschool. She has a BS in Elementary Education along with an Early Childhood and ESL endorsement. She was Teacher of the Year in 2005-2006 and 2016-2017 for Park Elementary. Along with her teaching assignments, Belinda developed the Time Together program. A program that instructs parents on how to prepare children to enter school with a skill set that will help them succeed. Belinda serves on the White Pine Student Teacher Assistance Team and is the chairman of the Cultural Committee.

Kelsey Clark (), White Pine Elementary School, kelsey.clark@ccsdut.org;
Kelsey Clark has just completed her fifth year teaching at White Pine Elementary but before that she taught Physical Education K through 5 for six years at Summit Elementary. She received both of her Bachelors Degrees, Exercise Science and Elementary Education, through Utah State University.

Andrea Bostwick (), White Pine Elementary School, andrea.bostwick@ccsdut.org;
Andrea Bostwick is a graduate of Utah State University and has been teaching for 13 years. She started her teaching career with Jordan School District in 2006. In 2011 she moved to Logan and began teaching at Edith Bowen Laboratory School. In 2016 she moved to Cache District where she is currently a 6th grade teacher at White Pine Elementary. Over her career she has taught 2nd, 4th, and 6th grades, but her definite favorite is 6th. Andrea has also taught ELED 3100, a teaching reading course at Utah State University as adjunct faculty. She has her Masters Degree, Reading Endorsement, and ESL Endorsement.
