Transparent Teacher Practices: Supporting Ongoing Development of Instructional Expertise

Inviting feedback based upon clear success criteria is the most efficient and effective way to maintain and improve the level of practice for any complex skill, including the development of instructional expertise. To give and receive actionable feedback in the classroom setting, our practices need to be seen and heard by other professionals. Transparent Teacher Practices allow teachers to collaboratively develop their instructional expertise. These practices build the collective efficacy of a school staff, because they give educators an opportunity to own their professional development and learning and they foster the instructional leadership of not just individual teachers, but also the collaborative development of teams of teachers. Through discussion, reading, and exploration participants will be introduced to five Transparent Teacher Practices which are Learning Walkthroughs, Collaborative Coaching, Collaborative Lesson Study, Video Analysis, and Peer Coaching. Participants will explore each of these practices and understand how to implement them within the Transparent Teach Practices Cycle. During the session, participants will begin the groundwork of planning for the implementation of Transparent Teacher Practices. Through-self assessment they will identify the potential barriers to the implementation of Transparent Teacher Practices and collaboratively troubleshoot how to overcome these barriers.

  • Participants will understand how to give teachers the ownership of continuous instructional improvement through peer-based professional development: Transparent Teacher Practices.
  • Participants will receive an introduction to five Transparent Teacher Practices, which include Learning Walkthroughs, Collaborative Coaching, Collaborative Lesson Study, Video Analysis, and Peer Coaching, as well as the critical components to successful implementation of these practices.
  • Participants will assess their institution’s readiness to engage in Transparent Teacher Practices and identify and problem solve around potential barriers to implementation.
