Ovulation Rates of Greater Sage-Grouse in North Park, Colorado
There is substantial research providing estimates of nest initiation rates (proportion of females attempting to nest at least once in a given year) for greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus). These data often show that initiation rates can be low (< 80%) and that yearlings appear less likely to nest than adults. However, females may initiate nests without being detected during the course of normal research, especially when radio-marked females are relocated infrequently during the breeding season (i.e., ~ 1/week). We evaluated ovulation rates (rate of females laying at least one egg in a given year) by examining ovaries from 941 females sage-grouse collected at hunter check stations in September in North Park, Colorado during 1975-1984. Mean ovulation rates varied slightly by year but were high for both yearlings (0.926, 95% CI = 0.895-0.948) and adults (0.964, 95% CI = 0.945-0.964). We made no attempt to estimate laying rates (number of eggs laid per year). Annual reproductive success estimated as the percentage of females producing a successful clutch in a given year based on primary feather replacement was lower for yearlings (39.9%) than adults (57.2%) in this same population during the same period of years. These results suggest there are other factors with a more important role in annual productivity than ovulation rates. We will present results from models that consider population (trend and density from counts of males on leks) and climate (precipitation and temperature) factors that may be related to variation in ovulation rates and reproductive success.
