HexSim: A Spatial IBM for Modeling Spatially Explicit Population Dynamics of Greater Prairie-Chicken Response to Fire Management in Kansas

Greater Prairie-Chickens (GPC) are a grassland obligate of conservation concern that are benefited and harmed by frequent field burning, making fire management an important aspect of their management. The Flint Hills of Kansas contain principal habitat for GPCs, including the largest tracts of tallgrass prairie in North America. A dominant land management regime imposed on the Flint Hills is intensive early season field burning (IESB) followed by extremely heavy cattle grazing, which is harmful to grassland integrity and GPC persistence. An alternative — patch burn grazing (PBG) — employs a rotation system to lower disturbance frequency. Empirical work shows a positive effect of PBG on grassland heterogeneity and GPC populations at local scales. Scaling these effects up to examine population-wide benefits of altered fire management requires modeling. We describe a spatial IBM constructed for this system, and how our simulated GPC populations respond to shifts in fire management. We found that under most scenarios the PBG management strategy outperforms the IESB management regime. On average PBG fire management strategies were able to sustain nearly twice the GPC population as IESB management.
