Context-dependency in the effects of fragmentation on metacommunity dynamics across 11 drying river networks

Natural and anthropogenic fragmentations of river networks limit organism dispersal, altering metacommunity dynamics. However, considerable context-dependency has been reported, due to a combination of spatial extent, associated environmental variability, wide range of dispersal modes and abilities of organisms, and variation in river network topologies. Here, we quantified ?- and ?-diversity components of invertebrate metacommunities across 11 drying river networks with contrasted levels of natural and anthropogenic fragmentation. Across all river networks, alpha-diversity was much lower in intermittent than perennial reaches, even long after rewetting, confirming an overwhelming effect of drying with a legacy effect on local communities. Beta-diversity was never correlated with environmental distances and dominantly explained by spatial distances accounting for fragmentation by drying, suggesting dispersal was the primary process shaping metacommunity dynamics in these drying river networks, where local communities recurrently undergo extinction and recolonisation events. However, the context-dependency and notably the levels of artificial fragmentation by weirs and dams influenced these findings. As river networks are increasingly being fragmented due to global change, these results suggest that those driven by local environment filtering could gradually become dispersal-limited, calling for adaptive management of both hydrological and biological connectivity.
