Physical Therapy as the First Point of Care to Treat Low Back Pain: An Instrumental Variables Approach to Estimate Impact on Opioid Prescription, Health Care Utilization, and Costs
This presentation will review the results of our recent study investigating the effects of varying levels of access to physical therapy on health care costs, utilization and opioid use. Among the results, we found that when individuals with low back pain (lbp) saw a PT First versus PT Later or No PT, they had an 89.4% lower probability of receiving an opioid prescription, 27.9% lower probability of having any advanced imaging services and 14.7% lower probability of ED visits. When the individuals with lbp, saw a PT versus no PT, the probability of an opioid prescription, advanced imaging, and ED visits were slightly lower yet still significant.

Dr. Harwood is the Director of Health Care Quality Program and the Director of Research for the Program in Physical Therapy at George Washington University Dr. Harwood has held academic positions at Columbia University, New York University and SUNY, Health Sciences Center at Brooklyn. He earned his BS in Physical Therapy from the SUNY at Downstate Medical Center and his MS and PhD degrees from New York University’s Biomechanics and Ergonomics Program. He has published and presented nationally and internationally in the area of physical therapy, occupational health, low back pain care and prevention, safe patient handling and movement, health care policy and quality, and leadership
