Toolbox for Deaf Children with Disabilities

At least 40% of children who are d/Deaf or hard of hearing have other disabilities, according to the Office of Research Support and International Affairs(2014). While hearing loss impacts language acquisition, when other disabilities are present, it can substantially affect every area of development. Early interventionists working with this population of children need to creatively apply everything they have learned while collaborating with other providers to support developmental progress. Language delays, behavioral challenges, visual impairments, and autism are a few of the comorbidities experienced by hearing differences. Given the heterogeneous nature of the population of Deaf children with disabilities (DWD), early intervention providers need a toolkit of strategies they can apply based on each child’s needs. Since there is a lack of research regarding DWD, professionals must collaborate with those from other specialties to create developmentally appropriate individualized interventions. During this presentation, interventionists will learn to recognize the functions of behavior and how to respond to each one. They will gain the tools to employ a variety of ways to increase infant and child engagement with people, objects, and their environment. Within daily routines, providers will embed activities that support language acquisition in appropriate ways to suit each child. Professionals will be challenged to be creative as they work with infants and children who are DWD. Office of Research Support and International Affairs.
