Audiology without borders: an international training program in hearing and balance care
In response to rapid advancements in hearing technology, a growing scope of practice, and increasing training needs, audiology began to transition to a doctoral level degree in 1996. In attempt to further support adequate professional training, The American Academy of Audiology recommended that all training programs in the United States complete this transition by 2007. Over 20 years later, however, limited resources and barriers to access continue to prevent many clinical audiologists from obtaining specific clinical training in key areas of audiology. The Clinical Education Program in Audiology at the University of Miami is housed in The Ear Institute of the Department of Otolaryngology. This program provides comprehensive training across the scope of practice in Audiology, and is intended to provide advanced training opportunities to hearing health care professionals. Highly specialized training is available in implantable hearing devices, pediatrics, central auditory processing, vestibular disorders, tinnitus, and advanced diagnostics, with experiences ranging from basic to advanced. The international program serves to support professionals providing hearing health services around the globe in attaining additional skills to advance their practice. Clinical practicums are designed to provide a comprehensive experience in all aspects of hearing and balance care, and are customized based on incoming skill level and requested experience. Trainees benefit from an interdisciplinary approach that enhances clinical skills and didactic learning in a rich inter-professional educational environment. This presentation will review a unique and innovative method to provide supplemental training for hearing healthcare professionals around the world. Our goal is to provide international opportunities for specialized training in audiology and the related fields.
