Voice to the Vanished: Lessons From the Cold Podcast

The Cold podcast focused on the December 7, 2009 disappearance of Susan Powell and the investigation into her suspected murder. Journalist and host Dave Cawley spent years researching the case. That research included a close examination of the never-before-released private journals of Susan's husband, Josh Powell. It also involved a study of journals kept by Susan's father-in-law Steve Powell. Together, the Powell family journals revealed an environment of extreme familial dysfunction, which traced its roots back to Josh Powell's maternal grandmother. This presentation will examine the escalating pattern of generational domestic abuse present in the Powell family, as well as the various ways that environment shaped the Powell children. It will also include discussion of how a victim-centered storytelling approach prompted positive action on the part of listeners who had or were experiencing domestic abuse.

  • Identify non-violent warning signs of possible future violence
  • Illustrate how patterns of abuse amplified in successive generations of the Powell family
  • Highlight opportunities for intervention in closed family systems
