Understanding the Role of Trauma and Polyvagal Theory in Domestic Violence
Trauma and the way it shapes the nervous system plays a huge part in how we react to both perceived and actual threats. The way our nervous systems are shaped can impact our responses and behaviors throughout our lives, and play a role in domestic violence. Trauma's impact on the nervous system has been verified through the research of Stephen Porges and Bessel van der Kolk. This presentation will discuss the specific effects of trauma on the nervous system and how this impacts behavior. We will then talk about the various states of arousal in terms of domestic violence perpetrators and victims and how this contributes to the dynamics we often see as providers. Lastly, we will discuss specific interventions for both perpetrators and victims to assist them in becoming aware of the dynamics of their own nervous systems. Additionally, we will discuss how we can assist our clients in reshaping the nervous system to eliminate chronic hyperarousal or hypoarousal, which will result in healthier and more adaptive nervous systems, decreased symptoms and increased functioning.
- Learn how trauma impacts the nervous system and shapes the brain for behavior and response to threat.
- Learn Polyvagal theory and how the states of hyperarousal and hypoarousal play a role in domestic violence dynamics.
- Learn ways in which treatment providers can intervene to address over and under activation in clients who are either perpetrators or victims of domestic violence.
