IFOS Contribution to the Ear and Hearing Care in Sub-Saharan Africa

IFOS is a Federation of all ORL societies. One of its major role is to improve knowledge and skills in all areas of otorhinolaryngology across the world. There are several ways to realize this plan. The IFOS website contains a high volume of educational material available for free. Another option is the training of ENT specialists in emerging countries to prepare them to provide surgical service, but also to become the teachers of other specialists in the given country. For this reason IFOS has started with the temporal bone course for Sub-Saharan countries. The first course was held in April 2017 in Harare with the support of Medtronic, Zeiss and MED- EL companies. More than 30 participants from 9 Sub-Saharan countries attended the course at the Harare University. The second course in a similar setting was organized in April 2018. One of the positive outcome of these courses were the reports from individual countries describing the ENT service. The total number of ear surgeries in these countries have increased more than 100%. Similar activity will be held in November 2018 in Lima, Peru: Otology and Audiology educational course for more than 100 attendees from Central and South American countries. These activities are significant contribution of IFOS to realize the conclusion of the WHO resolution on Ear and Hearing care.
