Pragmatic skills, Executive functions and Mental health in Children with Congenital CMV infection an

Previous studies have shown that children with congenital CMV infection who use cochlear implants (CI) might have additional diagnoses or deficits besides from the hearing impairment. The aim of the study was to explore pragmatic skills and executive functions (EF) in relation to language ability and mental health in a group of children with cCMV infection, and in well-matched controls who were deafened due to Cx26 mutations. Ten children with a cCMV infection and CI (4.8–12:9 years) and seven children with CI (4:8–12:8 years) participated in the study. Executive functions were assessed with formal tests targeting working memory and attention, as well as with parent and teacher questionnaires. Pragmatic skills and mental health were investigated with parent and teacher reports. Furthermore, the early spoken language outcome after CI-intervention was investigated in non-parametric correlation analyses with the purpose of examining the possible relationships between early language outcome with later EF, pragmatic skills, and mental health. Dr Löfkvist is a researcher and teacher at the University of Uppsala and Karolinska Institute. She has previously been associate professor at University of Oslo, Norway, and worked as clinician (cert-SLP, LSLS cert. AVEd) at the Cochlear Implant Clinic at Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden. Dr Löfkvist serves as Director at the AG Bell Academy Board, and is Honorary member of the Swedish parent organization Barnplantorna.
