Partnering for Hearing: Considerations for Cochlear Implant Donations in Low to Middle Income Countries
As the leading provider of hearing solutions, Sonova's vision is to create a world in which everybody can enjoy the benefits of hearing and live without limitations. The Hear the World Foundation (HTWF), a Sonova corporate foundation, is turning this vision into reality for people in need: For over twelve years, the Hear the World Foundation has been giving hope to children and their parents by way of access to audiological care, hearing solutions and speech therapy.
The aim of the HTWF is to enable people all over the world to enjoy better hearing. Every year we receive a large number of applications for support. An essential criterion for selecting and implementing projects is sustainability. The quality of audiological care provided is a crucial element of sustainability, and attention is paid to the potential for:
• High quality evidence-based practice
• Long-term capacity-building
• Outcome-monitoring
In Vietnam, HTWF recently partnered with the Global Foundation for Children with Hearing Loss (GFCHL) to provide 10 children with cochlear implant technology. This presentation will discuss a translational paradigm demonstrating how evidence based best practice can guide establishing a sustainable model for supporting cochlear implantation in low resource global communities. Key factors for sustainability include maintenance of technology, access to appropriate intervention, infrastructure to support outcomes post-cochlear implantation, local expertise, and parental involvement. HearVietnam can serve as a shining example of what can be accomplished through specific education and training of local professionals followed with charitable support with the long-term view in mind and a goal of sustainability through independent local support.
- • The participants will be able to state the benefits of building local capacity for long-term sustainability.
- • The participants will be able to identify the key factors needed to build a sustainable program that lays the foundation for long term benefit and quality outcomes specific to cochlear implantation.
- The participants will understand how the challenges around cochlear implant donations can be solved and how a model for sustainable cochlear implant donation could look.
