STARKEY HEARING FOUNDATION WFA® COMMUNITY-BASED HEARING HEALTHCARE MODEL: A CASE STUDY OF THE PHILIPPINES' PROGRAM

Background: Well known is that early verbal communication, speech and language development is important for cognitive development in children. Enrolling children with hearing impairment irrespective of the degree in schools for the deaf is a common practice in the developing world, including the Philippines. However, parents and teachers in most of the schools for the hearing impaired still poorly understand the importance of verbal communication. Objective: The objective is to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice of verbal communication and to promote the practice of verbal communication in schools by teachers and at home by parents. Methods: Parents and teachers of a school for the hearing impaired were sampled in the Philippines. Data collection was through a validated questionnaire regarding verbal communication by parents and teachers. A total of 125 participants were recruited for the study, 110 parents and 15 teachers. Results: This study showed that 15% of teachers and 5% of parents had heard about verbal communication with children with hearing impairment, but only 6% of parents and 24% of teachers knew that it is helpful for their children’s speech and language development. A meager 5% of teachers and 75 of parents practice verbal communication. However, 95% of teachers and 92% of parents are willing to inculcate the habit of verbal communication. Conclusion: Most parents and many teachers were unaware and do not practice verbal communication, even though they have an indifferent attitude towards it. Further efforts are required to improve the Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice of Verbal communication with children with mild-to-severe hearing impairments who use hearing aids in the Philippines.
