Sensory Play to maximise listening and speaking

“Timmy loves messy play, so we can use that to help him follow a plan in two steps and understand action words like pour and wipe,” These are the self-generated take-home messages from 18 month-old Timmy’s family following his ‘messy play’ AV session. Prior to the session, the family was worried about how much Timmy seemed to enjoy making a mess and getting his hands dirty rather than playing with his toy train. Slimy, sticky, greasy, with red paint stains on his cheeks, Timmy’s family leave the session feeling excited about the functional ideas they’ve learned: how to use empty containers, leftover baby cereal, food colouring, water and empty hand towel rolls to enhance Timmy’s play and work on the above take-home messages. All while Timmy has the best time! Join us for an interactive workshop on how to utilise sensory play1 to achieve the LSL goals we have set for the families we see. We will discuss current thinking on how this sense of touch, which is often neglected, is directly linked to cognition, language and emotional development and look at reasons why children with a hearing loss might benefit particularly. By using video examples we will demonstrate the stages of play development5, and explore how we can use play functionally, using a framework known as the 3P’s. We will get sensory by using practical, low-cost material to share and generate novel ideas and recipes that we can use with children from 0-5 years old.

  • Participants will explore current thinking on how sensory play can contribute to developing cognition and language, and particularly how it applies to children with a hearing loss
  • Participants will be able to explain the stages of play development through exploring sensory materials and generate novel, simple, low-cost sensory play ideas for children aged 0-5 years-old to maximise listening and spoken language
  • Participants will be equipped to guide and coach parents to use sensory play as a vehicle for maximising their child’s LSL through use of a framework to make play functional, fun and conversational.

Louise Ashton is a Speech-Language Therapist and Audiologist who became certified as an Auditory Verbal Therapist whilst working at Auditory Verbal UK in London. She works remotely from South Africa as a Senior Auditory Verbal Practitioner and Training Lead at Auditory Verbal UK in England, delivering AVUK’s AG Bell accredited training and mentoring programme to practitioners around the world. In 2019 she started a private practice at the Johannesburg Cochlear Implant Program and delivers auditory rehabilitation to children 0-5 years old. She is a regular presenter at national and international conferences. She has contributed to literature in publications nationally and internationally such as Auditory-Verbal Therapy for Young Children with Hearing Loss and Their Families, and the Practitioners Who Guide Them (2016) and Auditory Verbal Therapy Science Research and Practice. (2020)
