Reintroduction Black Grouse The Hoge Veluwe NP

In the 80’s, the Black grouse disappeared from The Hoge Veluwe National Park in The Netherlands. As a result, the Park then has committed itself to restore the quality of heathland vegetation. In 2003, a report presented a range of information, all of which aimed to increase the odds of creating a successful re-introduction programme. The Park decided to commit to the programme for 10 years. The first birds were released from a fixed cage in 2007. 85 % of the (transmitted) released birds were found dead and killed by the goshawk. In 2012, a midterm review concluded that the Park had successfully bred and released a large number of Black grouse which are seen in the years after. It also concluded that predators were a great danger and that the methodology and timing are critical to a successful release. Also the ‘soft release’ was introduced. In addition, an experiment was begun by realising new grain fields. These fields attracted many insects and other birds. The Park also decided to release birds just before breeding season. After 10 years we learned that the success factor is within a breeding and releasing method as close as possible to the natural behaviour and feeding patterns. It was impossible for The Hoge Veluwe to breed a large number of grouse on its own so we asked colleague organisations to help with this programme. Because support only came from a few small private owners The Hoge Veluwe unfortunately was forced to stop this project.
