The System of EHDI: A Socioeconomic Analysis in the State of Iowa

The Public Health Epidemiologist at Iowa’s EHDI program performed an in depth analysis to identify factors that increase the odds for delayed diagnosis and Loss to Follow-Up (LFU) among infants who failed their hearing screen from 2015-2018. The presentation will shed light on the importance of addressing health equity among infants as well as looking at the variations in timely diagnosis and LFU based on city of birth, NICU vs. Well-Baby, race/ethnicity, marital status, age of mother, and many other socioeconomic variables. The objective of this presentation is to identify the barriers of getting infants diagnosed by three months of age and identify with limited resources the best plan of action for system strengthening and addressing health equity within the EHDI community.

  • Identify the geographic variations in delayed diagnosis and Loss to Follow-Up (LFU) among infants and diagnostic providers within the community
  • Explore the socioeconomic factors that influence delayed diagnosis and LFU
  • Demonstrate an evidence based model that quantifies and predicts delayed Dx and LFU among infants in Iowa
