Promising Futures for Preschool Dual Language Learners

The early grades in school can be a challenge for dual language learners in which many will be adapting to new cultural demands while learning the skills and content knowledge expected of all students in a new language in a manner that is different from their homes and cultures. The recent report, Promoting the Educational Success of Children and Youth Learning English: Promising Futures, published by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering examines the research evidence on learning English from early childhood through high school, challenges dual language learners face, identifies educator effective practices to preschool through high school, identifies effective practices educators can use, and recommends steps to support high-quality educational outcomes for children and youth who are learning English. This session will focus on the early learners in preschool and how educators can strengthen the student’s foundational learning skills through effective practices that will provide the student with a promising future. The effective practices will include specific strategies that systematically introduce English while simultaneously supporting maintenance of the home language.

  • The audience will identify at least 3 challenges that many dual language learners face in academic learning and performance in schools where English is the primary language of instruction.
  • Based on what science reveals about bilingualism, the audience will identify at least 3 implications for learning in preschool.
  • The audience will discuss and model the recommended effective practices from the report titled: Promoting the Educational Success of Children and Youth Learning English: Promising Futures, published by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and apply at least 3 recommendations to their program’s needs.
