Maternal Perceptions of Breastfeeding and Infant Temperament
Temperament is believed to be constitutionally based individual difference in reactivity and self-regulation in the domains of affect, activity and attention (Rothbart, & Bates, 2007). The goal of this study is to explore and better understand the potential associations between maternal perception of breastfeeding and temperament. The trifurcation of previous research results indicates is that there is no conclusive evidence of correlation or causation between breastfeeding and infant temperament, though it is likely that there is some sort of association. The goal of this study is to explore and better understand the potential associations between maternal perception of breastfeeding and temperament through a qualitative semi-structured interview approach. Qualitative, inductive coding techniques will be used to identify themes from the audiotaped, transcribed interviews.
